World Elephant Day – Asian Elephant (Elephas maximus) Images were taken by Cyril Brass.
- Asian Elephants are the largest terrestrial animal in Asia.
- They are smaller than the African Elephant.
- The smaller ears are often in motion to cool themselves.
- Skin color ranges from dark grey to brown, with patches of pink on the forehead, the ears, the base of the trunk and the chest.
- There are 3 subspecies of Asian elephants – Sri Lankan elephant (Elephas maximus maximus), Indian elephant (Elephas maximus indicus) and Sumatran elephant (Elephas maximus sumatranus).
- A possible 4th subspecies yet to be determined – Borneo Elephant (Elephas maximus borneensis).
