Arenal Volcano had been Costa Rica’s most active volcano over the past 40 years.  In October 2010, Arenal went into a resting phase, without any smoke, ash, rocks and lava pouring out of its top and down its side. However there is still seismic activity occurring deep in the earth’s core below the volcano.

Up until 2010, eruptions occurred frequently but not severe with daily emissions of smoke and lava. The last major eruption was in 1968.

Arenal Volcano, with its symmetrical cone shape, looms large and ominous over the surrounding green pasture and forest covered hillsides.  Because of the geothermal activity beneath the volcano, the area surrounding the volcano is now spotted with a number of natural hot springs for visitors to enjoy.

The peak of the volcano is often blanketed by clouds. In all the visits to this picture perfect volcano dominating the horizon, I have yet to see that peak.
